Is there a respirator that actually works with a beard?

Yes — a powered one. A sealed mask needs a gasket meeting bare skin, and a beard breaks that seal. A powered respirator works the other way round: a blower pushes filtered air into the hood and out past your face, so there is no seal for facial hair to break, and no fit test.

This is the most asked question in woodworking respirator threads, and it usually gets a bad answer: shave, or wear the mask anyway and hope.

Both are wrong for the same reason. A sealed respirator is a negative-pressure device — your lungs pull air in, and the only thing stopping dust arriving around the edges is a gasket pressed against skin. Facial hair holds that gasket off the skin. It is not a matter of how tight you crank the straps; the leak path exists whenever hair crosses the sealing surface.

A powered air-purifying respirator inverts the problem. The blower does the pulling, drawing air through the filter and pushing it into the hood, so the inside of the hood sits at slightly higher pressure than the shop. Air moves outward past your face rather than inward past a seal. There is nothing for a beard to break.

The Breathie Thingy is rated EN 12941 TH3 P R SL, at least 99.95% particulate, for wood dust and sanding dust. It is not NIOSH-certified, and it is not approved for paint fumes, solvent vapors, gases, or oxygen-deficient environments. Runtime is 7 to 8 hours with three airflow settings, and it runs under 65 dB(A).

The honest trade-off: it is bulkier than a half mask and you are wearing a hood. If you sand for twenty minutes a month, that is a lot of respirator. If you are in dust for hours, it is the difference between wearing protection and taking it off to breathe.
