Fishbladder Woodworking

What does a powered respirator actually cost to run?

Filters and batteries, and they vary more than the units do. A Trend Airshield Pro filter pack is $70.99 for two and its spare battery $89.99. Ours are $14.99 a filter and $65 a battery. Over a few years that gap is larger than the difference in sticker price.

Sticker price gets all the attention and consumables are what you actually keep paying.

Filters. Trend list replacement air filters for the Airshield Pro at $70.99 for a pack of two, so $35.50 each. Ours are $14.99, or $22.99 for a Complete Filter Kit. How often you replace them depends entirely on what you cut - it is dust load, not calendar time - but whatever your rate, it is the same rate on either unit.

Batteries. A spare Airshield Pro battery lists at $89.99. Ours is $65. Batteries are a wear item on any powered respirator; lithium packs lose capacity over years whether or not you use them hard.

Being straight about the sticker price, because it cuts the other way. The Trend Airshield Pro lists at $489, which is *less* than our $499. If someone tells you the cheap powered option is always the off-brand one, that is not what the market currently looks like. Where the money differs over time is the consumables.

The comparison worth doing before you buy anything: take the filter price, multiply by how many you would get through in a year at your dust rate, add a battery every few years, and add that to the unit. On any powered respirator that number is bigger than people expect.
