What does EN 12941 TH3 P R SL actually mean?
It is the European rating for powered hood respirators. TH3 is the highest of three classes for that device type, P means particulate, R means the filter is reusable, and SL means it was tested against both solid and liquid aerosols. It filters at least 99.95% of particulates.
Respirator ratings are deliberately compact and completely opaque unless somebody unpacks them.
EN 12941 is the standard covering powered respirators with a helmet or hood — as opposed to EN 140 or EN 136, which cover masks you breathe through.
TH means Turbo Hood: a powered device with a hood rather than a tight-fitting facepiece. 3 is the class, and 3 is the highest of the three within that standard for this device type. It is not a claim to be the highest protection available in the world — a supplied-air system is a different category entirely.
P is particulate. R means the filter is reusable rather than single-shift. SL means tested against solid and liquid aerosols.
Two things this rating does not say, and both matter. It is a European standard, not a NIOSH certification — the Breathie Thingy is not NIOSH-certified, and if your workplace requires that, this is not the unit. And it is a particulate rating only: not approved for paint fumes, solvent vapors, gases, or oxygen-deficient environments.
